My project


In early February, Polaroid Corp., the Massachusetts Company that gave the world instant film photography, announced they would be shutting down its film manufacturing lines in the state and abandoning the technology that made it famous and popular for the past 60 years. The company will retain about 150 employees and will now focus on flat-panel TVs and digital photoPolaroid recently announced it will launch its PoGoportable photo printer later on this summer. First seen at CES 2008, the printer, whose name is short for Polaroid-on-the-go according to Polaroid, achieves its compact 4.7- by 2.8- by 0.9-inch size by not requiring any ink cartridges. Instead, it uses Zero Ink technology and zink Photo Paper as its medium.
The PoGo interfaces with cell phones via a Bluetooth link to print photos captured by the devices' integrated cameras, and via a FireWire-connected PictBridge interface with digital cameras. It's capable of outputting a full-color, 2- by 3-inch photo in under one minute. The ZINK 'paper' contains colorless cyan, yellow and magenta dye crystals that are activated by the heat emitted by the PoGo, making photos instantly ready. The setup evokes memories of Polaroid's original photos that took a few minutes to appear but didn't require a lengthy developing process.The PoGo will be available for sale at Best Buy stores throughout the US starting on July 6, and at Target locations on July 20, priced at $149. Ten sheets of ZINK paper retails for nearly $4, with a 30-pack trading for $10.

At the tech event - Demo 2007 – there was a new kind of printer announced, one that doesn’t use ink and is pretty small when compared to others + can use different colors when printing, one that can even work together with most camera phones and digital cameras. The new technology is called ZINK, and as you can see on the image it tries to recreate what old Polaroid machines do, which is delivering an instant photo (on paper) after taking a shot.
How does it work:
The key to the ZINK process is the ZINK paper, which is protected by more than 100 patents and patents pending. Dye crystals are embedded in the ZINK paper and are activated by heat from a ZINK printer. The crystals then colorize, producing high quality, long-lasting, durable, and affordable images.
The handheld Zink printer is not ready yet, but when it gets on the market I’m sure it will be a hit. The only problem is the quality and only the future can tell if it will be super good, good, average, or below the average - at this point it doesn’t become a hit.
